As of July 4th, 2024, there have been eight confirmed cases of Zika virus infection in Maharashtra, India. Six cases originated in Pune, with one each from Kolhapur and Sangamner. This news has caused some concern, so let’s delve deeper into the situation.

Understanding Zika

Zika virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are known to thrive in stagnant water, making it crucial to eliminate potential breeding grounds around homes and communities. While most Zika infections cause mild or no symptoms, the virus can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, as it can lead to birth defects like microcephaly in newborns.

Pune has seen the most significant number of cases, with two of those infected being pregnant women. Thankfully, health officials report both women are in stable condition and haven’t shown any symptoms. The Maharashtra government has responded swiftly, issuing advisories to all states urging them to be vigilant and screen pregnant women for Zika.

What to Do?

Mosquito Control

• Empty containers: Turn over, throw away, or cover anything that can hold water, such as buckets, drums, planters, flower pots, trays, and even bottle caps.
• Change water regularly: If you have a container that you need to keep upright, like a vase or birdbath, empty and refill it with fresh water at least once a week.
• Clean gutters: Make sure your gutters are free of clogs and debris so they can drain properly.
• Cover water storage containers: Water tanks, cisterns, and barrels should have tight-fitting lids.

Protective Clothing

• Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk) and when outdoors in areas where mosquitoes are known to be present.

Insect Repellents

• Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or para-methane-diol (PMD) to exposed skin.
• When using repellent on children, follow product instructions carefully. Apply repellent to an adult’s hands and then rub it onto your child’s skin. Avoid applying repellent near eyes and mouth.
• Reapply repellent according to the product label instructions.

Pregnant Women

• If you are pregnant, consult your doctor about Zika testing and precautions. Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Let your doctor know about any travel plans to areas with Zika virus transmission. Your doctor can advise you on additional precautions you can take.
