Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the Indian government for not repairing a 300-meter stretch of the Srinagar-Jammu Highway, blocked for more than 20 days after landslides in Udhampur.
Fruit Growers Suffer Huge Losses
Omar said the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway has hurt fruit growers and traders, as they cannot move their produce.
“If the elected government managed the road, it would be fixed already. We have engineers ready. The Centre keeps making promises, but nothing happens,” he said.
Omar to Write to Nitin Gadkari
Omar announced he will write to Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and demand that the highway be handed over to the elected government so repairs can begin quickly. He also asked the Centre to allow fruit trucks to move without delay.
Call for Daily Parcel Trains
The Chief Minister urged the Railway Minister to run daily parcel trains until the highway opens.
“One ceremonial train is not enough. It must run daily to support growers and traders,” Omar said.
Centre Promises Action After Omar’s Post on X
Later, Omar posted on X, saying fruit growers’ frustration is understandable because their produce is rotting. He wrote that the Centre promised action within 24 hours after his appeal.
Demand for Restoration of Statehood
Omar stressed that:
-
The fight for statehood will continue.
-
He felt disappointed that the Prime Minister did not fulfill his August 15 promise.
-
He thanked Sharad Pawar and other leaders for their support.
“We will not stop until we restore statehood,” Omar affirmed.
