Delhi is facing its worst air quality of the season, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 400 in multiple areas, indicating a serious pollution crisis. This alarming decline in air quality was recorded on Monday, November 4, 2024, following a spike in pollution levels observed the previous day.

Current Air Quality Situation

As of this morning, several monitoring stations operated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported AQI levels above 400, including:

  • Anand Vihar: 433
  • Wazirpur: 414
  • Jahangirpuri: 413
  • Rohini: 409
  • Punjabi Bagh: 404

Other parts of the national capital were classified in the “very poor” category. The significant drop in air quality is largely due to unfavorable weather conditions, such as calm winds and low temperatures, which hinder the dispersion of pollutants.

Meteorological Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted mist and low wind speeds until Wednesday, which could worsen the air quality situation. The Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi noted that these meteorological conditions are expected to be extremely unfavorable for pollutant dispersion.

On Sunday, the city’s AQI reached a troubling 382, an increase from 316 the day before, marking a concerning trend for the health and safety of residents.

Government Measures to Address Pollution

In response to the escalating pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented several measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These actions include:

  • Closing 56 construction and demolition sites
  • Fining 597 sites for failing to comply with pollution control standards between October 15 and October 31
  • Penalizing over 54,000 vehicles lacking valid pollution-under-control certificates
  • Impounding more than 3,900 vehicles that exceed the age limit allowed by regulations

Additionally, the CAQM has intensified efforts to combat illegal waste dumping, conducting over 5,300 inspections and taking action against violators.

To mitigate road dust, the agency has deployed mechanical road-sweeping machines, water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns across the National Capital Region (NCR), using approximately 600 sprinklers and anti-smog guns daily.

Conclusion

As air quality continues to deteriorate, it is vital for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The government’s actions are essential to improving air quality, but public cooperation is equally important in addressing this pressing environmental challenge.
