Families displaced by the recent Yamuna floods in Delhi say the damage and hardships continue long after the water recedes. While the floodwaters last only a week, the aftermath — muddy homes, damaged electricity meters, broken furniture, and even the risk of snakes — troubles residents for months.
Memories of 2023 Floods Return
Many residents recall the Delhi floods of 2023, which left them without power for weeks.
“There was no electricity for nearly a month. We had to survive on solar lamps, candles, and battery lights,” said Neelam Kumari, 34. She added that snakes often entered their homes during the floods, creating constant fear for families.
Life After Returning Home
Residents explained that the real struggle begins when they return to their houses.
-
No electricity for weeks, as damaged meters and wiring need replacement.
-
Mud-filled rooms and cracked walls that take weeks to clean.
-
Furniture and appliances destroyed due to water and short circuits.
“Everything from clothes and utensils to groceries, books, and uniforms gets ruined,” said Ramesh, an auto-rickshaw driver.
Thousands Affected Across Delhi
According to the Delhi government, over 18,000 people have been affected this year:
-
East Delhi: 7,200 people, 7 relief camps
-
North-East Delhi: 5,200 people, 13 relief camps
-
South-East Delhi: 4,200 people, 8 relief camps
-
North Delhi: 1,350 people, 6 relief camps
-
Shahdara: 30 people, 1 relief camp
Families staying in relief camps said they are thankful for food and shelter but remain worried about the condition of their homes once they return.
Children Lose Education Material
Parents are most concerned about their children’s education. Books, uniforms, and school supplies are often destroyed by floodwaters, forcing families to buy everything again.
“Impact Lasts for Months”
Sunita Devi, a mother of three, said: “The knee-deep mud takes weeks to clear. Only then can the house be cleaned properly. The flood stays for a week, but its impact lasts for months.”
