The Delhi High Court has issued an interim injunction in favor of Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, stopping the unauthorized use of her name, photos, and digital identity. The court observed that misuse of a celebrity’s persona without consent can lead to commercial loss, reputational harm, and violation of dignity.

Court’s Order Against Misuse of Aishwarya Rai’s Identity

Justice Tejas Karia stated that celebrity rights must be protected in the digital era, especially against the rise of AI-generated deepfakes, morphed images, and manipulated content.

The court has:

  • Restrained multiple websites and entities from misusing her name or images.

  • Banned creation and sharing of AI-generated or fake content linked to her identity.

  • Stopped the sale of unauthorized merchandise such as mugs, T-shirts, and drinkware.

  • Prohibited false endorsements including fraudulent entities using her name for business.

Action Ordered Against Online Platforms

The bench directed Google LLC and major e-commerce platforms to:

  • Take down flagged URLs within 72 hours of notice.

  • Share subscriber details of offenders in a sealed cover.

  • Cooperate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for further blocking instructions.

Google’s counsel clarified that removal can only be done on specific flagged links, while broader enforcement may require separate injunctions.

Why the Case Matters

The case highlights growing concerns around the misuse of celebrity identities through AI deepfakes and digital frauds. The court stressed that such actions mislead the public, damage goodwill, and create a false impression of endorsement.

Aishwarya Rai’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, detailed violations ranging from obscene AI-generated content to fake organizations such as Aishwarya Nation Wealth, which falsely listed her as Chairperson.

The court recognized Rai’s global stature as one of India’s most respected entertainers and brand ambassadors, underlining the need to protect her publicity rights and reputation.

Next Hearing Date

The matter has been listed for further proceedings on January 15, 2026. Until then, the interim order will continue, safeguarding Aishwarya Rai’s digital identity and personality rights.
