A US State Department briefing turned tense when a journalist accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not supporting peace talks between India and Pakistan. The reporter claimed that India opposed US-brokered efforts to ease tensions, but the US official handling the session quickly redirected the focus to maintaining peace.

Reporter Suggests Modi Rejected Peace Deal

During Tuesday’s press briefing, the journalist suggested that Pakistan welcomed former President Donald Trump’s peace efforts, while Modi allegedly did not. The reporter questioned if this refusal by India was a disappointment to the US government.

“Does that disappoint this building at all, the attitude of Narendra Modi of not welcoming this peace deal?” the journalist asked.

US Official Avoids Controversy, Stresses Focus on Ceasefire

Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department, chose not to respond directly to the reporter’s claims. Instead, he emphasized that the US is focused on preserving the ceasefire and promoting direct communication between India and Pakistan.

“We want to see the ceasefire maintained… that’s our focus,” Pigott stated.
“We encourage direct talks between both sides. That’s what we’re supporting.”

Trump as a Peacemaker?

The reporter further claimed that Pakistan believes Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in promoting peace in the Kashmir conflict. Responding to this, Pigott said:

“He’s a peacemaker. He’s also a dealmaker who wants to see peace and conflicts come to an end.”

Israeli Drones and Operation Sindoor

The journalist pressed on, bringing up India’s use of Israeli drones during Operation Sindoor, suggesting that it could harm Pakistan-Israel relations. Pigott did not engage in that line of questioning and repeated that the US only wants peace and dialogue.

India’s Stand vs. Pakistan’s Narrative

While Trump’s administration claimed to have helped broker peace, India maintains that it was Pakistan’s DGMO who requested the ceasefire after suffering significant military setbacks.

Pakistan has often used misinformation and propaganda to influence global opinion. Despite criticizing India for using Israeli technology, Pakistan has reportedly used weapons from China and Turkey, including:

  • PL-15 missiles
  • Byker Yiha and Asisguard Songar drones
  • Long-range rockets
  • J-10C Chinese fighter jets

Conclusion

The US continues to support a peaceful approach and urges both India and Pakistan to engage in direct dialogue. The focus, as reiterated by the US State Department, is on maintaining the ceasefire and avoiding escalation.
