Rescue Operation Overview On November 29, 2023, all 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel were successfully evacuated after a grueling 400-hour rescue operation. The workers, who had been trapped since November 12, were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh by a Chinook helicopter for further medical evaluation.
Current Status At AIIMS Rishikesh, the workers are undergoing detailed health assessments, including checks on their mental well-being. Initially, they were under medical observation at a hospital in Chinyalisaur. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the health center, where he presented each worker with a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as a token of support. Additionally, a Rs 50,000 reward was announced for the rat-hole mining experts who contributed to the rescue.
Operation Challenges The rescue operation faced numerous challenges, including equipment failures. The final 12 meters of debris were cleared manually by miners after the drilling machine broke down. The successful extraction of the workers was a testament to the perseverance and teamwork of the rescue teams.
Recognition and Support Following the rescue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the workers during a telephonic conversation, commending their resilience and solidarity while waiting for rescue. The extensive operation highlighted the dedication of all involved in overcoming significant obstacles to achieve a successful outcome.
